Die 5. Fallschirmjägerbrigade erreichte ihr Ziel in der zweiten Welle von Flugzeugen, nach der 3. Fallschirmjägerbrigade, und die deutsche Luftabwehr wartet bereits auf sie. Der Absprung wurde unter feindlichem Feuer durchgeführt und auch die Landezone war Artillerie- und Mörserfeuer ausgesetzt. Das 7. Fallschirmjägerbataillon erlitt Verluste durch Luftabwehrgranaten. Deren Teil der Landezone lag nur rund 640m von einer deutschen Batterie mit 88mm-Kanonen entfernt, die gezielt den Brigadestab und die Sammelstellen für das abgeworfene Kriegsmaterial  beschossen. Das 7. Fallschirmjägerbataillon sicherte sich die Landezone, während das 12. und 13. Fallschirmjägerbataillon auf das Brigadeziel, die Straße von der Landezone nach Hammikeln zu marschierten. Um 15:00 Uhr hatte die Brigade trotz heftigen Wiederstandes ihr Ziel gesichert und dabei sowohl eine große Anzahl von Kriegsgefangenen gemacht aber auch über 700 Verluste erlitten. [...] In dieser Nacht wurde die Division angewiesen sich auf den Vorstoß nach Osten am 26. März vorzubereiten [...]

Am 27. März führte die Brigade als Vorhut die Division an. Ihr erste Ziel, das Dorf Brünen war unbesetzt, so daß sie ohne sich lange aufzuhalten zum nächsten Dorf, Erle, vorrückten. Das 7. Fallschirmjägerbataillon wurde abgestellt, um vermutete drei Sturmgeschütze am Dorfrand auszuschalten während das 13. Fallschirmjägerbataillon eine nahe Anhöhe einnehmen sollte. Als das 7. Fallschirmjägerbataillon sich seinem Ziel näherte wurde es mit schwerem Feuer von Flugabwehr- und Panzerabwehrkanonen belegt. Das Bataillon war gezwungen, in Deckung zu gehen und konnte sich nicht weiter vorwärtsbewegen. In der Dunkelheit rückten sie dann vor und nahmen die deutschen Stellungen ein, dabei machten sie 60 Kriegsgefangene und erbeuteten eine Panzerabwehrkanone, 11 Flak-Geschütze und mehrere leichte Maschinengewehre. An anderer Stelle hatte das 13. Fallschirmjägerbataillon die Anhöhe eingenommen und dem 12. Falschirmjägerbataillon den Weg freigemacht, nach einem Feldmarsch von 32km das Dorf Erle bei Tageslicht zu erobern. Bei Sonnenaufgang wurde angegriffen und nach einem 15-minütigen Gefecht war das Dorf von den alliierten Truppen eingenommen worden. Die 5. Fallschirmjägerbrigade hielt den Standort Erle um die nachrückenden Truppen der Divison den Vormarsch auf die Ostsee zu ermöglichen. [...]

0830 - Move forward to ERLE.  Fwd posn and 5 Para Bde (6 miles).  Moved again to LENBECK.  Met enemy in woods on 41 grid line, and outside RHADE.  C Coy met opposition from 88 and 20 mm.s.  Considerable casualties.  Held on ridge, put B. Coy round at flank.  Shelling LENBECK.  B. Coy met opposition in woods about 2 Coys.  Cleared 1 Coy and held firm.  A. Coy had been sent to join B. Coy under 2 i/c, to form composite force.  Went further, flanking and by-passed opposition.  Arrived in LEMBECK about 2200 hrs.  Meanwhile C. Coy was withdrawn and together with Bn HQ moved to join B. Coy.  Bn HQ had no idea of whereabouts of A. Coy.  Objective now on high ground to S of L.  Moved on from B. Coy posn about 300 yds when C. Coy ran into opposition about 2200 hrs another Coy posn with Panzer faust and A.Tk gun.  Some casualties.  Withdrew to B. Coy original posn for night.  Total mileage approx 10 miles.  Prisoners of War 300.  Casualties: 2 Offrs (Lt. A.J.K. HACKER and Lt. A. FREANE killed).  5 O.Rs. killed.  3 Offrs. and 25 O.Rs. wounded.

0700 - Bde HQ est in ERLE with 12 Para Bn in ERLE, 13 and 7 Para Bns astride rd WEST of ERLE.  Maj Gen R.N. Gale (Comd Airborne Corps) and Gen Ridgeway (US 17 Div) visited Bde HQ with Div Comd.

0800 - Bde HQ left conc area near ERLE and moved off with COESFELD as objective.  Bns left, 12 Para Bn mounted on Churchill tks of 3 Gren Gds with tp 146 SP A tk Bty and 6 Airldg A tk Bty in sp, 7 and 13 Para Bns by march route.

800 - Bde HQ est at farm 595701 area COESFELD with 12 Para Bn in posn on SW outskirts of town.  By 2000 hrs 13 Para Bn was in posn on NW outskirts of town and at 2330 hrs 7 Para Bn moved into WESTERN outskirts.

Capture of ERLE.  See account of the battle attached at Appx.  Own casualties.  Wounded Cdn 491 Capt D.E. Holmes and 7 O.R's during the day.  Total enemy P.W. during day 78 incl 2 offrs & 2 W.O's.  Sea tail 'B' Party under Capt & QM E. Clarke joined the Battalion.

1045 - Advance resumed with ERLE 398503 being objective of 5 Para Bde.  Order of march 7th Bn - 12th Bn - 13th Bn.  Route BRUNEN 4827 - X Tracks 279486, STEERGERMANT.
1400 - Advance temporarily halted owing to bridge River ISSEL at 304483 and 306486 being blown.
2300 - 7th Bn encountered heavy opposition from light 20 mm AA guns and were delayed in their advance at MR 309484.  Consequently 13th Bn were ordered to outflank enemy positions and to seize and hold SOUTH WESTERN outskirts of ERLE.

0240 - This was successfully completed and Unit took up positions.  Remainder of day was spent resting.
0845 - Advance resumed objective COESFELD 5969.  Route ERLE 398503 - RHADA 443506 - HOFE 447523 - MR 457527 - 508597 - 515598 - Road junction 552675.  Unit halted at 590696 and received orders to pass through 12th Bn who had led the advance up to then and to secure and hold bridge and road area 590714 supported by two troops of CHURCHILLS of 4 Bn GRENS.
1910 - Objective taken.
2000 - 'C' Coy counter attacked by fire from 596719.  PW reported enemy strength approximately 70 men in that area.
